What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is an old practice that uses your olfactory senses which is your nose. The tiny molecules are taken in through your nose or skin and stimulate the part of your brain which is connected to memory and mood. Aromatherapy is a natural and holistic treatment that uses the concentrated herbal energies in essential oils from plants and flowers.
How can aromatherapy help me?
Essential oils can help combat a wide range of physical and emotional conditions. An effective way to treat stress related conditions, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and healing properties to the skin and body, anti-inflammatory. The effects can be relaxing, rejuvenating, uplifting, energising, calming, soothing emotions, can improve memory, relief of pain, reduce anxiety levels and help to combat stress and many other health benefits. The oils can also be used at home or in the workplace to enhance the atmosphere.
Pre-History
Aromatherapy was used by great ancient civilisations such as Egypt, Babylon, China, India, Arabia, Greece and Rome. In Egypt 5,000 years ago the priest physicians used fragrances such as cedar oil in medicine, embalming and in religious ceremonies. The Native American Indians burned aromatic herbs for their healing ceremonies.
In the 1930’s Gattefosse was working for his family’s business in the laboratory when he had an accident and badly burned his hand. He plunged his hand in to a vat of neat lavender oil which was the nearest liquid available and astonishingly not only did his burn heal quickly there was no scarring!
Today Aromatherapy is used in hospices, hospitals, intensive care, maternity units, geriatric units and treating the physically and mentally disabled.
How can you use aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy can be used in different ways –
- In a massage oil applied to the skin
- In the bath with a few drops mixed with full fat milk or an oil (e.g. almond oil, grapeseed oil etc)
- Breathe it in through a diffuser – add a few drops of essential oils to water in an aroma-diffuser
